Deloris Van Cartier (Whoopi Goldberg), a flamboyant Reno club singer, suddenly witnesses a murder committed by her secret lover, mob boss Vince LaRocca. To save his life, the police hid him in the impoverished monastery of St. Katherine's in San Francisco, posing as Sister Mary Clarence. With her outspoken personality and far from religious lifestyle, Deloris immediately clashes with the strict Mother Superior (Maggie Smith).
