Homer, an orphan raised in a Maine orphanage, is taught medicine by Dr. Larch—including illegal abortion practices. Longing for freedom, he goes to work on Wally and Candy's apple orchard. When Wally goes to war, his relationship with Candy triggers a dilemma of love and responsibility. Meanwhile, his past as an "unlicensed doctor" continues to haunt him.
